The week of November 13th-19th is recognized as Transgender Awareness Week. The following day, November 20th, is Transgender Day of Remembrance. According to GLAAD, Transgender Awareness Week brings attention to the trans community and the issues that they face, while Trans Day of Remembrance is a tribute to transgender people who were killed due to anti-trans violence each year. Clark College Libraries recognizes the importance of this week and created this collection of resources to share about trans people and the trans community.

“Gathered data shows an alarming trend of a gradual increase in murders of trans and gender-diverse people per year between 2008 and 2020. However, these figures are not complete. Due to data not being systematically collected in most countries, added to the constant misgendering by families, authorities, and media, it is not possible to estimate the number of unreported cases.”

TRANSGENDER DAY OF REMEMBRANCE – November 20, 2020

“For generations, transgender people have suffered various forms of abuse (and even death) for challenging the views, notions, and stereotypes around “male” and “female” identity. Every year we set aside November 20 as a Transgender Day of Remembrance. This holiday is meant to honor, commemorate, and memorialize those who face discrimination and stigma (often on a daily basis) across the nation. This holiday is also meant to focus on the persistent struggles transgender people face in their everyday lives, and how others can share their love, support, and hope.”

Understanding the Transgender Community

“Transgender people come from all walks of life, and HRC Foundation has estimated that there are more than 2 million of us across the United States. We are parents, siblings, and kids. We are your coworkers, your neighbors, and your friends. We are 7-year-old children and 70-year-old grandparents. We are a diverse community, representing all racial and ethnic backgrounds, as well as all faith traditions.”
