Add Zing with Jing!

What is Jing? Jing is free software that allows you to capture screen shots and short (5 minutes max) videos, with or without audio. Images are ready to paste into documents, or, store your captures at Jing’s companion site, screencast.com (2 mb, free).

On February 25, the i-Commons hosted a free drop-in sessions demonstrating how to get started and use Jing. If you missed the session, you can catch up with the Add Zing with Jing handout. Or, stop by the i-Commons and pick up a printed handout.

In addition to quickly capturing still images from your computer screen to paste into documents, Jing is especially useful for creating fast, informal video clips. The one below took about 5 minutes (that’s correct: 5 minutes!) to record and load onto this blog post.   Jing doesn’t allow editing or dubbing to video captures, but it’s easy to delete recordings and start fresh.  If you want a more full-featured still-image or screen-recording software, consider Jing’s big sisters, Snag-It and Camtasia, also from Techsmith.
